“Beti Bachao Beti Padhao” (BBBP) is a social campaign launched by the Government of India in January 2015. The primary objective of the campaign is to address the declining child sex ratio (CSR) and promote the education and empowerment of girls. The campaign aims to create awareness and improve the efficiency of welfare services intended for girls.
The BBBP initiative focuses on multi-sectoral action in 100 gender-critical districts, with a coordinated effort by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and the Ministry of Education. Key components of the campaign include advocacy and awareness generation, community mobilization, training and capacity building, and monitoring of the CSR.
Through media campaigns, community engagement, and effective implementation of existing laws and schemes, BBBP seeks to change societal attitudes towards the girl child and ensure her survival, protection, and education. The campaign has seen significant involvement from various stakeholders, including local governments, NGOs, and the general public, making it a nationwide movement to uplift and support girls in India.
